Areospace Applications - Extrude Hone
The cost, speed and quality of Extrude Hone’s electrolytic machining (ECM), electrolytic deburring (ECD), electrolytic polishing (ECP) and electrolytic pulse (CoolPulse™) technologies are excellent choices for automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and automotive suppliers for surface finishing and cleaning of precision automotive components, including, master brake cylinders, air bag housings, diesel fuel injector nozzles, crankshafts, gears, and hydraulic and pneumatic manifold blocks.

While Extrude Hone's ECM, ECD, ECP processes are essentially the same, they are used within the high-production automotive manufacturing sector to achieve slightly different results or objectives. For example, ECM produces the best burr removal results on automotive components with unique contours or specific-edge geometries that cannot be produced by conventional machining methods, such as diesel fuel injector nozzles or the recesses in gear teeth. ECD effectively deburrs holes and edges in difficult to reach locations like the interior surface of air bag housings or the cross-drilled holes inside manifold blocks. ECP provides ultra-high quality polishing of complex 3D contoured surfaces. CoolPulse produces extremely clean components at microscopic levels and surfaces that often exceed those produced with ECP.

Regardless of the electrolytic technology employed, all of Extrude Hone's electrolytic processes produce repeatable, uniform and high-quality surface finishes and edges to improve the mechanical performance and service life of processed automotive components:
  • » Strengthened components and enhanced, mirror-like surfaces
  • » Increased airflow of air bag housing
  • » Reduced gear noise and vibration
  • » Decreased crankshaft weight
  • » Increased component life-span
